It’s early in draft season and we really don’t have a clear idea of what the Packers needs are at this point.
As we kick off mock draft season, we start with 2 rounds and slowly work our way deeper into the draft as we get a better idea of the Packers needs through free agency.
With out first mock of the season, we found some pretty clear cut selections and great value, regardless of how the Packers offseason shakes out.
Here are the results:
.
Round 1
Devin Lloyd – Inside Linebacker
Profile: A quick, athletic backer, the 6’3 253 is a downhill thumper, who doesn’t miss tackles and can rush from anywhere. He can get off blocks in the run game to make plays and he’s solid in zone coverage against the pass. All-around great defender.
Analysis: I was so close to getting defensive lineman Jordan Davis, my early top choice for the Packers, but he went one pick too soon to the Buccaneers at 27. Instead, I went with another mid-field box defender. De’Vondre Campbell may be too expensive to retain after his breakout season and Lloyd could step in and provide stability at a thin position.
.
Round 2
David Bell – Wide Receiver
Profile: Good size at 6’2, 205, but not a physical freak. He maximized his abilities, though. He has a wide variety of moves to create separation off the line and is a route technician who can make space without elite speed. Also has great hands, makes acrobatic catches, and doesn’t allow the ball to be knocked out once it’s in his grip.
Analysis: The Packers probably won’t have Davante Adams long-term, but even if they do, they need more receivers and having a versatile guy like Bell will be a benefit no matter who the quarterback is.
.
Analysis
De’Vondre Campbell and Davante Adams are a couple All Pros that the Packers depended on heavily this season en route to the best regular season in the league.
Both may leave the team in the offseason and starting the draft with Lloyd and Bell could help the team weather those losses. As a bonus, these guys could both be immediate contributors even if the team retains one of both of their veterans.
.
Of Note
The Jaguars took wide receiver Jahan Dotson with the number 1 overall pick and I am pretty sure that won’t happen in real life.
For this mock, I drafted against the board from Buffalo FAMBase
